Two Australian musicians will bring a new experience to Bunbury Regional Art Galleries from 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 18.
Where Song Began has been devised as a musical celebration of Australia’s birds and how they shaped the world.
Inspired by leading ornithologist Tim Low, the performance explores the Australian origins of songbirds.
Accessible for all ages, Where Song Began encourages the audience to contemplate the origin of birdsong and the importance of Australia's bird history.
The program includes music spanning 300 years, from Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and JS Bach to Arvo Pärt and new Australian works.
The show also features a film of landscape stills, moving images, and bird call field recordings sourced from the Cornell Ornithology Lab.
Simone Slattery was recently awarded a PhD in Music Performance from the University of Adelaide and performs regularly with many Australian ensembles.
“In Where Song Began we have combined a selection of music both old and new, pairing some of the many bird inspired works from the baroque, classical and romantic periods with newer works and our own improvisation,” Slattery said.
“We utilise a number of extended instrumental techniques to emulate the sounds of gulls, the piercing call of a Grey Strike Thrush, and a new work commissioned especially for this project creatively emulates the rhythmic song of the Red Wattle Bird.”
Anthony Albrecht is an Australian graduate of The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance program and is now based in London.
“We share a love of nature and a desire to tell stories with our music, connecting with and inspiring audiences in new and exciting ways,” Albrecht said.
