The Bunbury Basketball Association has made several significant changes ahead of the 2018/19 season.
Basketballer Sam Fotu has stepped up to take over the chairperson position.
The new season will mark Mr Fotu’s first as a board member.
He will take the reins from Gary Bock and David Wren, both of whom stepped down from the board after the 2017/18 season.
The new chairperson said he was honoured to be continuing on from Mr Wren and Mr Bock.
He said we would bring his business acumen and 30 years’ experience in basketball to the position.
“Anyone that knows me knows that I don’t take myself too seriously and that I like to see the brighter side of things,” he said.
“I am hoping that me being part of this role will make for a fun experience for all those involved.
“It will be about keeping the competition at the level it’s at now, and fine-tuning it here and there.
“The end-game for me is about growing our sport and working to provide more facilities.”
Mr Wren was given a life membership for fulfilling the chairperson role and being a valued sponsor since 2010.
After joining the board in 2008, Mr Bock went on to serve as vice chairperson and director of operations.
Life member Wayne Hayres will bring eight years’ experience as a board member to the vice chairperson role next season.
Mel Goff has taken over as treasurer from Sam Bilcich, who had held the role over the past four years.
In her fifth season as secretary, Marina Quain will be taking on operations/competition portfolio responsibilities.
“We’re on track to get a similar number of teams as last season,” she said.
“We’re also putting more emphasis on our referees and we have instructed a referee coordinator.
“We’ve got a lot of experience in the make-up of our board and we are looking to implement our new strategic plan.”
Ms Quain said teams from Dunsborough and Eaton would become part of this season’s senior competition.
The 2017/18 season marked the Bunbury Bears’ biggest for representation across local and state competitions.
The board has seeked to improve on that in the new season.
