A Bunbury group that supports those who have lost loved ones to suicide are holding a family fun day as part of Mental Health Week.
The Bunbury Suicide Support Group will be hosting the event – Find the Hero in You at the Sanctuary Golf Resort on Sunday, October 14, to raise awareness around positive mental health and wellbeing.
Emma Brown discovered the support group after moving to Bunbury from Darwin to be surrounded by loved ones following the death of her mum
“It was a massive shock – I was looking for some kind of support and someone to talk to,” she said.
“I attended a meeting one day and I said I want to do an event, I want to get the community together to show we can support in whatever way we possibly can.”
The day will include a quiz, door prizes, buffet lunch, bouncy castle and a silent auction, with everyone encouraged to dress up as their favourite super hero.
Bunbury Suicide Support Group member Jo Robinson said everyone was welcome with funds raised to go towards resources on suicide grief and loss.
“We’re eventually looking at being able to provide short-term accommodation,” she said.
“Along with practical things like cooking meals, taking kids to school, mowing lawns, walking pets - things that people in that situation can’t do because it’s too much.
“We want people to come along and share and feel comfortable.”
