Bunbury held its first International Waves of Lights Memorial Ceremony on Monday night at St Patrick's Cathedral.
The world-wide concept is that by lighting candles at the same time as other countries it creates a wave of lights around the globe, to represent understanding and to support those who have lost a baby.
"To be giving people that recognition that they had a baby and they lost it, there is no reason why it shouldn’t still be recognised."
- Jan Batts
Organiser Jan Batts said they wanted to fill the gap because there was nothing specifically to commemorate miscarried babies.
“We heard about the International Wave of Lights and to our knowledge it has not been held in Bunbury and so we thought one in four pregnancies do not carry to full term so there is a lot of people out there who have had a miscarriage,” she said.
More than 30 community members took part.
Ms Batts said they kept the ceremony simple and would look at running the event in the future again if there was support for it.
“We’re pretty excited about it, to be giving people that recognition that they had a baby and they lost it, there is no reason why it shouldn’t still be recognised,” she said.
