The Bunbury Water Polo Club's 2018/19 Summer Season Opener gave new and experienced players a taste of what's to come.
Flippa Ball (Under 12s), junior, senior, and ‘old boys’/masters players hit the pool at the South West Sport Centre on Friday, October 12, eager to get stuck into another season of water polo.
The event brought 41 players as well as referees, organisers, and parents together.
Players also took part in the first round of matches on October 16.
Two recent ‘have a go’ sessions saw 10 new female players being recruited.
Bunbury Water Polo Club secretary Tegan Marley said the organisation was looking to retool during the new season.
“We’re hoping this year to get enough players together for some more teams each week,” she said.
“With the new women coming in, we’re opening up training options for beginners to get into the sport.
“I came down to the club to have a go...it’s a really great club, really family-friendly, and everyone supports one another.
“It’s a really good environment and a great club to be a part of.”
It’s the kind of sport you can play and enjoy at any age, that’s really important.
- Alice Luscombe, Bunbury Water Polo Club President
Alice Luscombe has happily led the club as president for the past four years.
“It’s fantastic for cardio-vascular fitness, anyone who plays comes out saying: ‘I didn’t realise how hard that was going to be’,” she said.
“We have a small club but it’s a really close-knit club and we’re really welcoming of any new players.
“We have a small committee of really hard-working people, it’s a huge combined effort from our committee.
“It’s the kind of sport you can play and enjoy at any age, that’s really important.”
The club prides itself on its range of participants at different skill levels, from newbies to those who have been playing for more than 30 years.
The ‘old boys’/masters are described as the backbone of the club, regularly helping the other players.
National Country Championship players and former national team athletes are also part of the club’s identity.
The club and its members are now preparing for 2019’s West Australian Country Championships in Busselton next March.
