After round one was washed out, the Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association felt determined to start the 2018/19 season over the weekend.
Hay Park and Marist met on a slightly soggy pitch, with both sides eager to get the four points.
The Redbacks had a home ground advantage, and saw fit to use their time at the crease effectively.
Opener Jono Whitney spent more than two-and-a-half hours with the bat and hit a whopping 89 runs from 116 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes.
His inning eventually came to an end after he was caught by wicketkeeper Adam Spinelli.
Fellow opener Punya Bahl slogged 28 off 49, before Marist bowler Reece O’Connell (5/23 from nine overs) began his assault on Hay Park’s batting order.
The team of O’Connell and Spinelli stumped Bahl to take Marist’s first wicket of the day.
O’Connell went on to dismiss middle order batsmen Tom Scott for four (caught by Brayden Clarke) and Dillen Watson for a duck (caught by Alan Utterson).
Spinelli then stumped Michael Tassone (15 off 29), putting Hay Park on 4/121.
Marist claimed its fifth wicket moments later as O’Connell trapped Gregory Stephens lbw.
Following the dismissals of Johnathon Miller (7 off 22) and Daniel Sheppard (golden duck) at the hands of Jack Wilson (3/19 from four overs), Hay Park was on 7/152.
A spell from Reon Tither (21 off 11) gifted Hay Park a 8/181 total after 42 overs.
Marist hit the crease and valiantly attempted to get the run count ticking over.
Spinelli’s inning (32 off 50, featuring five fours) was cut short after he was run out by Redback Regan Smith.
Clarke (54 of 74) knocked nine fours and reached his half-century shortly before his dismissal.
O’Connell continued his form with a half-century of his own (51 off 72).
Utterson, Jaxon Cornford, Joshua Bradbury, Wilson, Josh Vague, and Lewis Homden added only a handful of runs to Marist’s total.
Vague’s dismissal saw Hay Park’s Shaun Bulman (5/18 from eight overs) claim his fifth scalp of the day.
Marist was all out for 180.
Eaton began its season with a convincing 47-run victory over Dalyellup Beach.
The Beavers’ inning began with openers Matthew Foreman (36 off 52, including six fours) and Cory Fitt (22 off 26) in control.
Following Fitt’s dismissal, wicketkeeper Christopher Marrow (49 off 70, with four fours and a six) upped Eaton’s run count and spent a whopping 133 minutes at the crease.
A catch from Dalyellup Beach’s Corey Fagan prevented Marrow from reaching his half-century, leaving Eaton on 4/156.
Marrow was one of Coen Bradshaw’s three dismissals for the clash.
Pursing Eaton’s 5/177 total, Dalyellup Beach’s inning got off to a rocky start.
The dismissals of openers Mitchell Boyle for a duck and Fagan for 12 stranded Dalyellup on 2/25.
Despite solid efforts from captain/wicketkeeper Paul Jones (33 off 52) and Daniel Lomax (25 off 37), Dalyellup Beach couldn’t quite match Eaton’s level of intensity with the bat, ending its inning on 8/130.
Reigning premiers Colts had little trouble breezing past Leschenault.
Leschenault won the toss, but quickly lost openers Nathan Douch (bowled by Connor Ipsen) and Matt Buchanan (caught by Jaysen Miguel, bowled Ethan Kelly).
Steven Denison made 24 off 29 before being caught by Cruize Ciallella.
Western Australia Under 17s star Jayden Goodwin launched into a devastating campaign with the ball.
Goodwin claimed 5/10 from seven overs, and almost single-handedly caused Leschenault’s middle and lower order collapses.
Dismissed for 96, the Green Caps could do little to prevent an easy victory for Colts.
Following Colts opener Blaze Rosinski’s dismissal, Goodwin (32no off 77) hit the crease and continued his form.
Jayden then teamed up with his father, Murray Goodwin (45no off 44, including five fours).
The duo helped Colts to reach 2/99, passing Leschenault’s total in just 28.3 overs.
Colts second grade side prevails
Colts’ second grade side delivered a powerful performance in its 67-run victory over Leschenault at Bunbury Recreation Ground in round two.
Danny Ennor slogged 53 runs off 77 balls, before fellow Colts batsman Ian Oglesby added to the count with 35 off 36.
Leschenault had trouble chasing Colts’ 151-run total.
Colts bowler Cameron Hannagan decimated the opposition’s top order to claim 4/22 from nine overs.
The Green Caps were dismissed for 84 after 29 overs.
Solid efforts from Andrew and Blair Hutton at the crease failed to prevent Capel from suffering a 61-run loss to Donnybrook.
Half-centuries to Donnybrook’s Mark Manea and Philip Welsh helped the Dons to 6/198.
The enthusiastic Capel line-up could only manage 8/137.
Collie’s batsmen had a blast on Saturday, posting 4/185 to give Harvey-Benger a near-impossible challenge to overcome.
Despite a spirited time at the crease for Frank Minella (notching up 78 off 70), Harvey-Benger fell short of Collie’s total with 8/183.
Lower order batsmen Jayden Merritt (32 off 52), Beau Luzi (22 off 50), and Ty Verhaaf (23 not out off 32) helped Dalyellup Beach to a 7/135 total.
Marist made light work of Dalyellup’s bowlers, with Glen Dehring knocking 66 off 63 including 10 fours.
The Blues reached Dalyellup Beach’s total in 22 overs.
