Cricket fans greeted Colts and Hay Park as both teams walked out onto Bunbury Recreation Ground last weekend.
Both sides had something to prove – Colts was looking to maintain its sterling reputation, while Hay Park was aiming for two consecutive wins following its narrow round two victory over Marist.
The round three clash saw Colts head to the crease first.
Hay Park needed early wickets to throw Colts off its game. The Redbacks succeeded, with Reon Tither bowling Colts opening batsman Blaze Rosinski for 20.
Fellow opener Jayden Goodwin was next to go, hitting 12 before being caught by James Ewing.
Hay Park’s Jono Whitney (2/26 from nine overs) then bowled Lee Sorfleet for a duck, putting Colts on 3/41.
Needing runs to put the home side back in contention, Murray Goodwin stepped up to the challenge.
Goodwin knocked 79 runs off 80 balls, including eight fours and one six.
He and Colts captain Cruize Ciallella (47 off 103) made for a devastating duo, notching up 126 runs.
Goodwin’s inning came to an end after he was caught by Graham Yates.
Middle order batsman Joe Barningham hit 24 not out off 17 to up the run rate.
Hay Park wicketkeeper Dillen Watson stumped Ciallella late in the inning, robbing him of his half-century.
Ciallella and Goodwin’s coolness under pressure helped Colts to a 5/205 total.
Redback star Whitney continued his form with the bat, hitting 65 off 84 including seven fours.
The Redback captain, however, could only watch as Punya Bahl was dismissed for one, caught by Ciallella.
Following the dismissal of Yates (16 off 66), Michael Tassone caused strife for Colts’ bowling line-up.
The middle order batsman slogged 85no off 66, in an inning featuring five fours and four sixes.
Colts then responded with skill and power.
Thanks to devastating bowling from Ciallella (4/42 from eight overs), Hay Park suffered middle and lower order collapses.
Colts’ supporters raved after Hay Park finished its inning on 8/193.
Dalyellup Beach continued Marist’s less-than-favourable start to the new season.
Corey Fagan was dismissed for a duck, while fellow Dalyellup opener Mitchell Boyle hit 19 before being run out by Ben Shipley and Ben Clarke.
Rodney Shemeld upped the ante to knock 82 off 132 in his 152 minutes at the crease.
After Dalyellup captain/wicketkeeper Paul Jones hit 19 off 49, the remaining middle and lower order batsmen added only a handful of runs.
Chasing a reachable target of 7/158, Marist was immediately caught off guard by Dalyellup’s Noah Greenmount (3/15 from seven overs).
Greenmount bowled Marist opener Brayden Clarke for 10, before a catch by Jones sent Ben Clarke back to the clubrooms for nine.
Reece O’Connell and Jaxon Cornford were also dismissed early on.
Kyle Davis (43 off 63, five fours) and Shipley (48 off 65, six fours) got Marist’s inning back on track.
A lower order collapse led to Marist being dismissed for 153.
Eaton’s strong battling line-up earned the side an eight wicket victory over Leschenault.
Leschenault opener Kurt D’Agostino got the ball rolling with 55 off 104, before Nathan Douch (11) was caught by Christopher Marrow.
Middle order batsmen Thomas Buchanan (42 off 56), Matt Buchanan (27 off 25), and Jarrad Quinn (29 off 37) kept the run rate ticking over.
A lower order collapse saw the Green Caps end their inning on 8/192 after 45 overs.
Matthew Foreman starred for the Beavers with 51no off 66, but was later forced to retire.
Cory Fitt then knocked 79 off 78 including a whopping 12 fours.
Efforts from Marrow (34 off 51) and James Hillery (21 off 14) helped Eaton to reach Leschenault’s total after 36 overs.
Green Caps too strong for Capel
Leschenault’s second grade side delighted fans with an emphatic victory over Capel on Saturday afternoon.
The Green Caps watched with glee as Brendan Stemp hit 85 runs off 112 balls.
Chasing Leschenault’s respectable 5/255 total, Capel opener Murray Tennent-Brown responded with 85 off 91 including 13 fours and one six.
Following Ben Tognolini’s dismissal, Capel’s middle and lower orders were decimated by Leschenault’s bowling line-up.
Luke Slater (6/36 from nine overs) worked to dismiss Capel for 218.
Collie continued its strong start to the season with a 46-run win over Marist at Forrest Park.
Brayden Kent (46 off 58) and Greg Tomasini (38 off 68) helped Collie to reach 9/172.
Despite a solid inning from Mark Steele (45 off 59), Marist could not find the right momentum.
Eaton’s line-up knocked 235 during its showdown with Dalyellup Beach.
Dalyellup’s Paul Ryan (62 off 76) and captain Joshua Merritt (45 off 36) gave their side a chance at victory.
The team’s inning eventually came to an end on 182.
Donnybrook’s opening batsmen Mark Manea (82 off 43) and Philip Welsh (70 off 84) troubled Harvey-Benger in their round three clash.
Dismissing Harvey-Benger for 182, the Dons delivered a stellar performance in their first home game of the season.
