A determined team of two make up the Bunbury Harvey Regional Council Waste Education Team who together spread awareness for the importance of recycling and reusing.
Working across the South West, the team was recently acknowledged for their hard work as finalists in the WA Waste Awards.
Education coordinator Kate Shaw said they were surprised when they heard the news and humbled to know what they were doing was recognised at such a high level.
They will be vying for the title of Waste Team of the Year alongside the West Coast Eagles, following two major initiatives they worked on earlier this year.
“Scrap Battle was a recycled art competition, we went and collected a whole heap of stuff from the landfill and transfer station, gave it a clean and turned it into art with kids,” Ms Shaw said.
“We had 200 entries into the competition and then we held an awards evening at Stirling Street Arts Centre, which was great.
“We were really pleased with how the whole thing ran and we’re already getting responses back from people asking when the next one will be.”
The second project saw the creation of the education programs very own mascot – Scoop.
“We picked a pelican, we see them flying around the place, they’re connected with the land and the ocean and they’ve got quite a good image to the community and central to WA,” Ms Shaw said.
“We have been working really hard to try and spread ourselves as far as we can across the seven councils we work for.
“It is quite a mean feat but we give it a good go and we have some great support systems in the local councils we work with and utilise those to spread further into the community.”
Winners will be announced on November 15, 2018, during Recycling Week.
