A man who went on a spending spree with a stolen bank card at a local shopping centre has faced Bunbury Magistrates Court.
Jamie Lee Victor Partington faced court on Monday, October 29 charged with three counts of gaining benefits via fraud as well as one count of attempting to gain benefits via fraud.
He was also charged with one count of possessing stolen/unlawfully obtained property.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Phelps told the court a wallet, with a Commonwealth Bank card, was stolen from a Binningup home at 10.30pm on Thursday, September 6.
On September 7, Mr Partington purchased $35 worth of clothing, $59.98 worth of cigarettes, and $23.15 worth of takeaway food.
The purchases were all made at Eaton Fair Shopping Centre, with Mr Partington captured on CCTV footage.
He then attempted to purchase $365.83 worth of vehicle parts, before the shop owners were alerted and the transaction was cancelled.
The defence said Mr Partington’s friend had owed him money, and had given him the card as re-payment.
The lawyer said Mr Partington was currently living in Mandurah, with more support in his life and an increased chance of finding work.
The defence added his client had made early guilty pleas, and that the offences were at the “lower end of the scale”.
Sgt. Phelps said the prosecution didn’t fully accept the reasons why Mr Partington committed the offences.
Magistrate Belinda Coleman remanded the matter to Thursday, January 24.
