In a bid to improve footpaths and cycleways across the Bunbury Geographe region, the City of Bunbury is preparing to undertake significant works along Estuary Drive.
The shared path from Willinge Drive to the railway crossing is set to be improved, with a three metre wide red asphalt path and a one metre offset from the traffic lane including a kerb barrier.
Works are scheduled to begin in January 2019 and will coincide with the resealing and widening of the road surface of the same section, which is funded through the Federal Government Roads to Recovery Program.
Both projects will be carried out simultaneously and are expected to take about eight weeks to complete.
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said the project would provide a safer passage for Bunbury Geographe residents as well as an improved driving surface on the road.
“As outlined in the City’s Strategic Community Plan we are committed to becoming a city that is easy to get around with attractive streetscapes and pathways,” he said.
“The Estuary Drive shared path provides a vital link between Bunbury and Pelican Point, Eaton and Australind, providing the only safe off-road route into Bunbury.”
If successful in securing more funding the City would like to see stages two and three completed before 2022, which would include upgrades to the path and road from the railway crossing to Pelican Point.
The upgrade of this route was identified within the 2010 City of Bunbury Bike Plan and the 2012 Greater Bunbury Bicycle Master Plan.
It was also identified as a critical route within the Draft Bunbury Wellington Cycling Strategy 2050.
