The 13th Nina’s Women’s Triathlon has become something of an institution in the Bunbury sporting scene. Sunday morning saw nearly 200 women take part in the Gold and Diamond distances at the SWSC.
The grey skies did not seem to curb the ladies enthusiasm, many undertaking a triathlon for the very first time.
The popular Gold Event comprises of a 200m swim in the SouthWest Sports Centre pool, followed by a 10km ride on closed roads around Hay Park sports fields, and then finished with a 2km run on the grass of Hay Park.
There was an option for slightly longer event in the Diamond Distance for the avid women who have completed several Nina’s Triathlons over the years.
The event attracts a wide range of participants with ages ranging from the youngest at 13 to the eldest competitor at 70 years of age. It is a non competitive event in that there are no first, second and third place awards.
Pink was certainly a favourite colour among the crowd, and it was really spectacular to see so many of the women smiling, celebrating, and embracing each-other and their close friends and family across the finish line.
These events cannot take place without such a generous group of women, men and children donating their time. Once again this amazing crew produced a fun, safe and rewarding event.
A wonderful team of volunteers were up early Sunday morning preparing the course and transition zone; providing support, cheers, and encouragement; and manning the aid stations on course.
Many thanks must go to the Nina's committee of Donna Gellard, Lorrie Morrison, Donna Hoy, Silvia Griffin, Lucy Harris and Annette Owen. Their tireless work behind the scenes make this type of event possible.
The aim of the event is to encourage women of all ages to lead healthy active lives, to be role models for their friends and family and to promote positive outcomes through achievement.
As such it welcomes women of all abilities in a supporting and comfortable environment and the smiles on their faces as they cross the line tell much of the story.
So when you see Nina’s Women’s Triathlon roll around next year don’t say to yourself “I couldn’t do that”, say “I can and I will”.
The Ninas Women’s Triathlon is proudly organised by the Bunbury Triathlon Club.
Bunbury Triathlon Club’s next event will be held from 6:30am at Minninup Pool in Collie on Sunday, November 18.
