Rider Joseph Azzopardi pushed My Laina ($8) across the line to clinch last week's $19,000 South West Refuge Handicap.
An impressive field of 3yo+ entrants – who hadn’t claimed a metro win in the past year – lined up for the final race of the day on Sunday, November 25.
A hearty crowd at Bunbury Turf Club watched with glee as race favourite De Andes passed the final turn in front.
After settling in eighth and passing the turn in sixth, Azzopardi and My Laina moved away from the field to cross the line first.
The bay mare raced to an emphatic victory, finishing a neck ahead of De Andes and two-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Danefin.
Racing over 1410 metres, a field of 11 thundered down the track during the Frederick Coffee – South West Refuge Handicap event.
Scandal Maker ($31) began the race as an outside chance.
The brown gelding past the turn in fourth, before rider Craig Staples saw the perfect opportunity to move pass the competition on the home straight.
Scandal Maker crossed the line just a head in front of Misty Lad and half a length in front of Bunbury Bus Hire Handicap winner Friarandice.
In a thrilling showdown, Plead the Fifth ($19) moved up from seventh past the turn to win the R Spencer Elders Real Estate - South West Refuge event.
Trainer David Harrison cheered after Bartrader ($6.50) claimed the $11,210 first prize in the Martina Ivey Brow Artistry event, crossing a long-neck ahead of Mankind.
Earlier in the day, rider Jordan Turner and race favourite Lipstick Flickers ($1.95) moved up from third at the final turn to take out the 1410m Yours or Mine event.
Bunbury Turf Club will host its next race day on Thursday, November 29.
