A biannual Historians’ Forum may be on the cards if the City of Bunbury council approves an investigation into the viability of the event.
A new report recently called for chief executive officer Mal Osborne to investigate the “resource implications and benefits” of the idea.
Mr Osborne would then report back to the Heritage Advisory Committee within the first quarter of 2019.
If allowed, the event would be held at the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre.
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said he supported efforts to preserve the region’s history.
“I think you should always reflect upon the history and heritage of an area in order to make informed decisions about the future,” he said.
“It’s good to be reminded of the way things were.
“There are a whole heap of changes that occur constantly, so every now and again it’s good to look at old photographs etc.”
The Heritage Advisory Committee first came up with the idea for a forum in December 2017.
The group’s plan was to invite local historians to pool together their research and share stories about early pioneering settlement dates in Bunbury (post Noongar).
The city then hosted a forum on August 9, 2018, featuring presentations and panel discussions from local historians, scholars, and people interested in history.
Approximately 30 people attended the event at the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre.
Mr Brennan said future forums could create opportunities for people and community groups from across the region to work together.
“The city strongly supports groups such as the King Cottage Museum, which is tirelessly run by volunteers,” he said.
“We’re blessed to have so many volunteers right across our city who do great work.
“There are some people who have a keen interest in the history and heritage of our community. It constantly appeals to them and I really appreciate everything they do.”
Council was expected to vote on the recommendation at its Tuesday, November 27 meeting.
