In the 2018/19 Bunbury Basketball Association men's competition, Bulls retained top spot after scoring a narrow win over Aces Sky.
Facing off against an undefeated Bulls’ line-up, Aces Sky was predicted to fall flat.
The team put up a fight before running out to a five-point lead midway through the first term.
After clinching a three-point lead at quarter time, Bulls fell behind again in the second half.
With help from Wade Hitchcock (19 points), Aces Sky secured a two-point buffer at half time.
Both sides delivered fast, exciting basketball in the third quarter, with Aces Sky doing enough to lead by five at the final change.
Bulls shot seven unanswered points just before the final buzzer, going on to claim a 77 to 69 victory.
Bulls’ star Travis Durnin landed one attempt after another. He picked up 23 points, including four two-pointers and four behind the three-point line.
Tornadoes Black remains second after its impressive performance against Eaton Eagles on Friday night.
The Tornadoes side landed 10 unanswered points right after the opening tip-off.
Trailing by six at quarter time, Eaton fought to catch up in the second term.
Tornadoes Black then piled on the points to clinch a 41 to 18 lead at the main break.
Jason Smith (24) and Lucas Goff (18) assisted in putting Tornadoes Black ahead by 30 at the final change.
As Eaton ran out of steam, Tornadoes Black went on to claim a 90 to 49 win.
Tornadoes Red remains third despite suffering a three-point loss to Dunsborough in round nine.
The Tornadoes squad dominated the first term, before the Oilers picked themselves up in the second.
Sublime efforts from Harry Mooney (26) and Matt Mansfield (25) helped Dunsborough to secure a four-point lead at half time.
Michael Lay returned to the competition and shot a remarkable 27 for Tornadoes Red, keeping them in the game.
Dunsborough held a small lead throughout the second half, eventually earning a 91 to 88 win.
The women’s competition saw Tornadoes Red claim an upset victory over second-placed Dunsborough in their blockbuster clash.
Up by four at the first change, Tornadoes Red remained in control during the second term.
Despite powerful efforts from Dana and Adele East (24 and 17 respectively), Dunsborough was unable to take the lead in the second half.
Tornadoes Red scraped home to score a 79 to 72 win.
Tornadoes Black remains undefeated following its resounding 25-point win over Aces Sky.
The league leaders were unstoppable, moving out to a 15-point buffer at quarter time.
Maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the second and third quarters, the side dominated the contest.
Tornadoes Black stars Cian Parsons (18) and Ebony Bilcich (17, three three-pointers) led the side to a convincing 68 to 43 result.
Teams will return to the court for round 10 on December 14.
Bears triumph in state event
Bunbury Bears took on some of WA’s best teams during this year’s Smarter than Smoking State Championship series.
The Bears’ Under 13 Men – Division Two side scored an emphatic 42 to 10 win over Mandurah Magic.
The squad then earned a 35 to 24 victory over Willetton Tigers 1 in the grand final.
Bears’ U13 Men – Division Three 1 team suffered a 47 to 19 grand final loss to Perth Redbacks 1.
Bears’ U11 Women – Division Three side celebrated after defeating Geraldton Buccaneers 25 to 9 in the grand final.
According to the Bunbury Basketball Association, the tournament provided a chance for teams to prepare for the Country Championships in February.
The association sent 12 teams to this year’s event, and has nominated 27 for next year’s Country Championships.
