Areas of land in Boulters Heights are due for a major overhaul, according to the City of Bunbury.
The current plan for Boulters Heights was one of several issues discussed during the City of Bunbury’s annual general electors meeting on Tuesday, December 4.
Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan revealed the land would be handed back to the city from the State Government in the near future.
He told the Mail the city was seeking to transform Boulters Heights into “Bunbury’s Kings Park”.
“It’s been a project for over a year. The city – within the past two years – adopted a Boulters Heights Management Plan that included removing the fire risk elements and looking at the beautification of the area,” he said.
“There’s quite a bit of infrastructure there, in regards to paths and timber walkways.
“There are also some informal paths that people have either used or created over the years.”
Mr Brennan said the negotiations were ongoing.
“There are two blocks of land in Withers Crescent that the city and state jointly own,” he said.
“Our officers are working with the state to find out what they require in order for us to take freehold ownership of those lots.
“Once we’ve got freehold ownership, then we’ll offer those lots for sale.
“They’re high value lots, so, after the city has paid the State Government the cost of doing the sales, the intent is to dedicate the net proceeds to improving Boulters Heights.”
Mr Brennan said the city would work to remove the introduced species of plant life whilst adding more native flora.
“It’s a prominent landscape for our city and it can be improved,” he said.
Mr Brennan also discussed proposed changes to an area of land in Nuytsia Avenue, Carey Park.
He said the land would also soon be handed back to the city from the State Government.
The Mayor said the area would lend itself well to medium-level residential development/independent living.
“We’ve got the same situation with Boulters Heights as with the old council depot area in Nuytsia Avenue,” he said.
“Two-thirds of that land is owned by the state, and we own roughly one third.
“We’ve been having discussions to have the freehold title allocated to the city.
“There’s quite a lot of rehabilitation that will need to occur with that site.”
Last year, council officially voted to move the depot from Nuytsia Avenue to its new site in Picton.
