Australind Tennis Club is fondly looking back on its achievements throughout 2018.
The club began the 2018/19 season with an Open Day on September 15, with 30 players participating in a Fast 4 format.
“We got about five new members out of that one,” Club president Janet Varney said.
On October 9, the club held its biggest fundraising event for the year – the Joy Schmidt Gala Day.
The event included a round robin competition with four divisions and 46 players from across the South West.
Of the 11 new players to the competition, five were division winners on the day.
Seven teams played mixed doubles during the club’s Captain’s Trophy tournament on November 10.
Cameron Rob and Judi Eardley-Wilmot took down their competition to secure the top prize, with Max Munro and Kylie Hoy coming in second.
“It was well attended. It’s for our social players whom go along to the club every Saturday afternoon,” she said.
“Once per year, we have a tournament for them.”
The club then put on a show for its President’s Cup event on November 20.
“It’s usually our social players that come along. Once per year, we like to have a competition for them,” she said.
Among the eight teams competing, Sherrilyn Wilson and Chris Shaw claimed victory.
Deb Owens and Janette Federici were runners up.
With an average membership of 120 players, the club holds four days of tennis activities per week.
The club will start its next night pennants competition in January, ahead of the Club Championships in late February/early March.
“We’ve got a good number of active players in the club,” she said.
“We have a very healthy Monday night competition and two days of social tennis each week.
“It’s a very active club, it’s got a lot of club spirit and camaraderie, and everyone pitches in.
“We want people to come along. They can play social tennis either on a Tuesday or a Saturday. People don’t have to join straight away, they can see if they like it first.
“If you do, then you can sign up.”
