Marist Cricket Club’s Bronwyn Walker will represent the South West and Western Australia on the national stage.
Walker will play for WA during the 2019 Toyota Australian Country Cricket Championships in Shepparton, Victoria.
From January 3 to 11, she and her teammates will go up against some of the country’s best regional cricketers.
Walker was one of four South West players to be selected.
“It feels unreal, it’s amazing,” she said.
“There’s been a lot of learning. There’s been so much to learn because I am fairly fresh to cricket.
“It drives home that there are opportunities for people in regional areas to strive for.”
Walker underwent a series of trials before being chosen.
“When WA’s coach Angele Gray came down a few weeks ago, she asked if anyone wanted to play and if we wanted to try out,” she said.
“There were bowling and battling drills designed to test our abilities.
“We had a camp up in Perth last October. The coach [Gray] then wanted us to send her videos of the drills we had been doing.
“We also kept her up to date with how we were going.”
Walker played for three years before joining Marist’s newly-formed women’s team.
Walker encouraged all women and girls to give cricket a shot.
“I just enjoy smashing the ball around,” she said.
“It’s been really beneficial having teams down here.
“It’s been great to network and join some of the Perth teams for a few games, as well.”
