A man convicted over a series of drug and weapons offences has been sentenced to one year in prison.
Gregory Gordan Morgan sat silently during his sentencing hearing in Bunbury Magistrates Court on Thursday, January 3.
Morgan previously pleaded guilty to having ready access to illegal drugs and weapons, possessing cannabis, possessing a controlled weapon, possessing drug paraphernalia, possessing methamphetamine with intent to sell or supply, and possessing a controlled/prescription drug.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Karl Rep told the court officers had found Morgan asleep in his girlfriend’s car – outside Coles Express, Glen Iris – at 6.30am on Wednesday, September 12.
While searching the vehicle, police found a plastic bag containing 0.08 grams of meth.
Officers also found 24g of cannabis, a knife, and a glass smoking implement with traces of meth.
After finding $585 inside Morgan’s wallet, police uncovered text messages on Morgan’s phone relating to drug dealing.
The court also heard Morgan had previously been stopped by police on Bussell Highway, in Gelorup, on Wednesday, August 29. He tested positive for meth.
During a search, officers found a knife with a 13-centimetre blade in his right, front pocket.
In January 2018, Morgan was sentenced to 15 months in jail, which was suspended for 12 months, over an unrelated unlawful wounding charge.
His lawyer, Jen de Clerk, told the court Morgan relapsed into a “life of alcohol and meth” following his friend’s death.
Ms de Clerk said he was “highly motivated to work on his treatment needs”.
She added Morgan had accepted responsibility for his actions.
Describing Morgan’s conduct as “concerning”, Sgt. Rep said the suspended term of imprisonment should be triggered.
Sgt. Rep stressed the dangers and consequences of dealing drugs in the community.
Magistrate Belinda Coleman accepted Morgan’s guilty pleas and acknowledged he had been in custody since September 12.
She reduced the 15-month jail term to 12 months after taking into consideration the time he had already served. She also handed him a $1300 fine.
Morgan was made eligible for parole.
