One of the region’s biggest sailing clubs is looking forward to a fun, action-packed 2019.
The Koombana Bay Sailing Club recently returned from the Christmas/New Year break to launch its events calendar for the year.
The club has 330 proud members, all of whom enjoy the Koombana Foreshore’s picturesque surrounds.
Members regularly partake in the club’s Twilight Sailing events, held on Wednesday nights.
The competitors – spanning across three divisions – are tasked with completing two laps each.
Heading up a small team, Koombana Bay Sailing Club commodore Jon Birch captains Division One vessel Crews Control each week.
“You get two boats in the water, it’s a race,” he said enthusiastically.
The club is striving to attract around 40 vessels per session.
“It is a great way to break up the week; it provides a bit of stress relief in the middle of the working week,” Mr Birch said.
“It is set up to be a short, sharp sail. It’s also a great way for visitors to find out more about the club.
“The club has got a really good participation rate, and we’ve got the best place to sail in Western Australia.”
The club hosts race meetings every Saturday, featuring competitors from all over the region.
The participants span across five divisions – Cruisers A, Cruisers B, Division IV, Catamarans, and Junior Dinghies.
Welcoming everyone with open arms, the club also provides hands-on training for juniors and adults.
Mr Birch is immensely proud of each member’s achievements.
“We would like to increase participation and have more members across a broader range,” Mr Birch said.
“I love the camaraderie and I love experiencing nature. Whenever you go sailing, it’s always different. There’s always something new.
“It’s also great being out on boats and being out on the water.”
