Lucianna Park will be the home of Bunbury's youth precinct following last night's unanimous vote at the City of Bunbury council meeting.
Lucianna Park is across from the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre and was identified as the most suitable option following community surveys late last year.
City of Bunbury Youth Advisory Council Mayor Sean Smith said although it was an important bit of land it was often under-utilised and lacked acitivation.
“It's not the entire Lucianna Park, it's only a portion - we believe it is a great location for a youth precinct, which should be central and part of the CBD for now and the future,” he said.
“It is a focal point, for young people - it's near public transport, it's central in the CBD so it's safe and accessible, it's near the cinemas, Timezone, entertainment centre and Koombana North beach.
“It's a location not just for young people but for the entire community.
“In terms of the design process that comes after the location, we have ideas and community feedback of what people would like.
“It will include a skate park, a parkour, basketball courts, events space, ample shade – a real mix of community assets.
“We want to make it an attraction where when people come over Koombana Bay bridge they go 'wow what's that?' and they'll want to come in and visit and check it out.”
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said he was looking forward to reading community feedback on the project.
“That space really appeals for something very iconic and it needs to be community based," he said.
Planning for the precinct began early last year, other locations identified during the consultation period included the Back Beach, Bicentennial Square, Koombana Bay and Hay Park.
“This is a really exciting opportunity for young people in Bunbury to have a space that they can call their own,” Mr Smith said.
“There currently isn't a central meeting space in Bunbury for young people, we want it to be a space for all young people to come and hang out and participate in community."
