Five young cricketers from the South West are getting ready for the 2019 Junior Indoor Cricket Nationals.
Held in Casey, Victoria from July 6 to 14, the tournament will see teams from every state and territory going head-to-head.
This year, the Western Australian Cricket Association will be sending 13s Boys, 15s Boys, 17s Boys, 14s Girls and 17s Girls’ teams over east.
Bunbury cricketers Riley Stenhouse, 12, and Cody Ryan, also 12, will play for the U13 Boys’ team, while Donnybrook's Luke Hutchinson, 14, will represent the U15 Boys’ side.
Rory Given, 16, and 15-year-old Jaxon Cornford, both of Bunbury, will join players from all over the state in the U17 Boys’ side.
Undergoing trials in Bunbury and Perth, the players were tested on their skills, love of the sport, willingness to learn, and effectiveness under pressure.
Prior to April’s event, the five will be working on their bowling, batting, and fielding skills.
“It will be a good experience. We’re looking forward to travelling and seeing all of the different places,” Stenhouse said.
“We’re looking forward to working with people with the same mindset, as well.
“We also want to meet new people.”
Bunbury Indoor Cricket and Sports Centre owner Daron Stenhouse said they strived to provide exciting opportunities for the region’s young athletes.
"From my perspective, it is fantastic that we get to see kids from the South West have the opportunity to participate in the state trials, that we held for the first time in Bunbury in September," he said.
"Hopefully, these five players will be able to follow the pathway of the likes of Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Darcy Short and others, who all started with indoor cricket."
Stenhouse and the five players urged all community members to give indoor cricket a go.
“It is a nice, quick game,” Cornford said.
“It’s all about fitness and about having some fun.
“I want to continue playing state indoor cricket, and then see where I go from there.”
