Wavemasters Outrigger Canoe Club is over the moon after hosting another successful Monkey’s Relay event on the weekend.
The eighth annual relay saw 11 boats, and around 125 participants, hit the water at Koombana Bay on Saturday, February 16.
Teams from the Wavemasters Outrigger Canoe Club, West Coast Outrigger Canoe Club, Geographe Outrigger Canoe Club, Mandurah Ocean Club, Hurricane Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe Club Inc., Fremantle Outrigger Canoe Club, Rockingham Outrigger Canoe Club, and Perth Outrigger Canoe Club went head-to-head over four, 5-kilometre laps of the course.
Clinging to a commanding lead during laps three and four, Mandurah Ocean Club came away with the trophy.
Wavemasters gold master participant Julie McCreghan enjoyed the fun and excitement, once again.
“This is one of the most amazing events on our calendar. It’s nice seeing the camaraderie between the teams, and the venue is great,” she said.
“Canoeing makes for a great overall exercise program because it works out every part of the body.
“Clubs are all friendly and they like having people on-board.”
Wavemasters’ junior and senior members train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings each week at the Bunbury Yacht Club, off Cobblestone Drive.
New members are inducted through a six-session training course.
Crews from all over Western Australia are now preparing for the Wavemasters Geographe Classic on Saturday, April 6.
