Capel Ladies first division bowling team made history with a commanding win over Busselton this week to win the South West Bowling League Pennant Flag.
This win puts the Capel Bowling ladies record to a new level winning the pennant flag 15 times out of the last 20 years.
Capel finished in fourth spot at the end of the 14 home and away games.
They beat the bigger clubs of Bunbury in the preliminary final and Eaton in the semi-final to win a place in the grand final against the league leader's Busselton who won the pennant flag last year.
A pennant team comprises three teams of four bowlers. Each team has a lead, second, third and skip. Twenty-one ends of bowls are played in both the home and away games and the finals including the grand final.
The three Capel teams in their pennant side were Joy O’Brien (lead), Lorraine Pell (second), Beryl Payne (third) and Suellen Payne (Skip).
Donna Krepp (lead), Gloria Clapp (second), Dorn Costello (third and Bev Scott (Skip) and Bev McKenna (lead), Daphne Wilcox (second, Shirley Hickey (third) and Margaret Savickis (Skip).
The grand final was played on a neutral synthetic turf green at Eaton. Bowling enthusiasts were treated to a high calibre game with each end very tightly fought with only centimetres separating the winning shots at each end.
The overall winning aggregate of the three teams over Busselton was 27 shots with Busselton scoring 43 shots and Capel scoring 70 shots.
President Margaret Smythe said the win was testimony to the dedication of the Capel Ladies and their will to win.
"To come from fourth place and to win all three gruelling finals is a marvellous result," she said.
“Our small club, with about 65 members, has demonstrated over many years to be very competitive in all types of weather conditions playing on different Bowling Green surfaces.”
