A handful of Western Australian clubs headed to the Leschenault Leisure Centre for an action-packed day of rugby union on Sunday, March 17.
The South West Rugby 10s competition saw Under 8s, 10s, and 12s teams from Bunbury, Mandurah, Busselton-Dunsborough, Albany, and Perth hit the field.
The South West Junior Rugby Association, Rugby WA, Choose Respect, and Headspace showed their full support for the tournament.
Bunbury Junior Barbarians president Malcolm Blackledge said they were honoured to host this year's event.
"We had an awesome day, and the turn-out was really great," he said.
"We're a family and we provide a good, family-friendly environment. It's a great sport to play."
Playing in overcast conditions, the South West Spirit U13s faced the Beasts touring squad in an enthralling showdown.
South West Spirit U13s coach Johan Smit said the competition gave young players the chance to showcase their talents.
"This year's event will provide a steep learning curve for us, but next year's will be a lot better," he said.
"Events like these help to get rugby union out to the wider community. This event also brings in support from outside of Bunbury.
"Rugby WA has done something great for the South West by placing a permanent development officer in the region. He will be running a five-week rugby program in local schools.
"With his help, Rugby WA will be promoting rugby to schools in the area.
"He will also be running extra programs within the clubs, as well."
The Bunbury Bulls Junior Rugby Club will host the Rugby 10s event in 2020.
