The Bunbury Harvey Regional Council will assist local community gardens in the Bunbury Wellington region by donating compost.
At their ordinary meeting on March 28, council approved up to three tonnes of compost per year for each community garden in the region.
Collie's Our Community Garden Inc, Leschenault Community Nursery, Bunbury Community Garden, Thommo's Community Garden, Havery CRC Community Garden, Brunswick Junction Community Garden, Donnybrook Community Garden, and Balingup Community Forest Garden make the eight community gardens in the region that will be eligible for the compost donation.
The BHRC produces organically certified compost from the Food Organics Garden Organics (green) bins collected from Bunbury, Capel, Collie, and Donnybrook-Balingup residents, with Harvey coming on board in July this year.
BHRC chief executive officer Tony Battersby said all the compost was made to organic standards and was Australian certified.
"Community gardens offer the opportunity for residents who have little or no yard to participate in community activities and grow their own fresh vegetables," he said.
"They also provide productive social hubs that improve health and foster a lively and connected community."
Currently the Organics Processing Facility in Dardanup produces over 4000 tonnes per year of certified organic compost from food and garden waste.
The BHRC also manages the Banksia Road Compost Facility, which took 11,000 tonnes of organic waste and produced 4500 tonnes of compost last year.
Our Community Garden Inc committee member Ellen Corbin said the compost would help immensely.
"We would've had to purchase compost later this year around September to top up the garden beds and now we won't have to do that. We will save a lot of money," she said.
She thanked the BHRC for their contribution and also to the Shire of Collie and other members of the community who support the garden.
