Conquer Cystic Fibrosis South-West coordinator Taryn Barrett has described the community's support as phenomenal following a month of fundraising across the region and state.
May is national cystic fibrosis awareness month with several fundraisers held including the Capel Vale Conquer Cystic Fibrosis Grand Ball, which raised $250,000 for a lung transplant machine.
Closer to home Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School held a Wacky Hair Day last week to raise funds. Head of Primary Rob Whirledge said he believed it had demonstrated community spirit within the school.
"Two students, Leeuwin and Conor were aware that the brother of one of their friends has Cystic Fibrosis and wished to do something positive to support the cause," he said.
Mrs Barrett and her husband Adrian started the South West chapter of the volunteer-run charity in 2016 following their son Connor's diagnosis.
Since then they have raised $180,000 thanks to footy matches, movie nights, fashion shows and community group donations.
Mrs Barrett said she thought the Wacky Hair Day was the perfect way to finish off cystic fibrosis awareness month.
"Every little bit helps and to see kids getting behind kids I think that's really special," she said.
"Connor will be coming to school next year and he'll come into a school community where children already knows what cystic fibrosis is and care.
"The compassion that the children are showing is extra special.
"As parents of a child with a chronic illness, we feel helpless because so much is out of our hands but this kind of support really helps."
