To improve health and raise money, the Cancer Council WA is encouraging the community to take on the challenge of Dry July. Cancer Council South-West education officer Shenae Norris said committing to the alcohol-free month yielded many health benefits.
"This year funds raised in support of Cancer Council through Dry July will go towards our 13 11 20 Information and Support Line," she said.
"Going dry for July is a great opportunity to look at how you can reduce your overall alcohol consumption."
Former Slammers player Wade Hitchcock echoed Ms Norris' sentiments and is taking on the challenge as incentive to kickstart a healthier lifestyle since retiring from basketball, hoping to raise $500 for the cause.
"At one stage I was drinking almost every night so I've started cutting back and it's already made a massive difference - I'm more switched on and focused," he said.
"A lot of people probably don't realise the impact alcohol has on your body, so cutting it out you'll probably find a new lease on life."
