To celebrate the recent installation of a permanent billboard at Dot's Place, Cancer Council WA is running a Live Lighter competition to encourage the community to eat a colourful array of fruit and vegetables.
Cancer Council WA South-West education officer Shenae Norris said the creative winner would receive a $50 fruit and vegetable hamper and an Intersport Bunbury gift pack including a $100 gift voucher.
"I think a lot of people don't relate Live Lighter to Cancer Council WA," she said.
"With obesity I don't think people understand that carrying extra body weight is a risk factor for many different cancers.
"We're really trying to encourage people to eat a varied diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and to choose a whole variety of different colours because we know that different colours have different types of antioxidants and vitamins."
The competition is free to anyone aged 18 and over, those wishing to participate need to take a photo of themselves in front of the new Live Lighter Dot's Place billboard eating their favourite fruit and vegetable and then put the photo in the comments section of the Live Lighter Facebook post.
Ms Norris said the billboard was about encouraging people to incorporate more colours into their diet.
"Eating a whole range of different colours is going to be beneficial for your health," she said.
"It's about increasing fruits and vegetables to decrease your cancer risk, we know that fruits and veggies have a really high fibre content, which is a preventative for many cancers."
Ms Norris said she was hoping to be able to change the billboard regularly with different health messages throughout the year, but that it would depend on funding.
"We're celebrating that we've got a permanent billboard because obviously it does cost us money to put these things up and being based regionally we don't always get as much promotion as metro and we really need it," she said.
"So this is really exciting because we've actually got something permanent now."
