A team of 17 Taekwondo West students had a very successful outing at the 2019 Western Australian Taekwondo Invitational in Perth, on Sunday, June 9.
A total of nine gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals were won, and the club was presented with a Bronze Club Poomse trophy as well.
This is a big achievement for a small club and team.
Students and instructors, ranging from seven to 59 years of age, competed against much bigger clubs from Perth and around the state to bring home a swag of medals and trophies.
Some of the novice competitors were a little overwhelmed at their first tournament, but did themselves and the club proud by winning medals for their efforts.
Head instructor Annette Buss was proud that a show of great sportsmanship was displayed by all of the club's members on the day, especially when two training partners fought for gold in a final bout.
Both showed enough skills to make it an exciting match.
Competitors representing Taekwondo West were Annette Buss, Steve Spouse, Kim Walter, Katey Walter, Nayte Wright, Kobe McLaren, Aiden McLaren, Robert Howson, Nathan Rousseau, Caiden Rousseau, Brayden Matheson, Leo Walter, Ella Matheson, Andrew Bragg, Jaxon Johnson, Neon Visleno, and Arianna Rawson.
Thanks to sparring coaches Kim Walter, Michelle Keddie, and Justin Reynolds, head instructor and Poomse coach Annette Buss, and club referee representative Steve Spouse.
The students all gained valuable experience ahead of the state selection tournament, scheduled for late July.
Competition will be fierce when they compete for the chance to represent WA at the Australian National Taekwondo Championships, later this year.
Last year, Taekwondo West claimed 10 gold, six silver, two bronze, and five state titles at the Sports Taekwondo Western Australia 2018 State Championships in Perth.
The club then sent a team over to the National Championships last September.
Taekwondo West trains participants of varying skill levels from around the South-West.
