Maggie Dent to present workshop for parents

Funds from the seminar will be given to not-for-profit YouthCARE, which provides chaplains in schools across the region to support students.

"What I do is normalise what is really healthy for children and that your job as a parent is to one day make yourself completely redundant so your children don't need a grown-up when they're leaving home," Ms Dent said.

"What I'm validating is so much of what we thought was effective parenting but is now judged as poor parenting.

"So many people come out of the seminar saying they feel so much better as a parent."

The Bunbury Regional YouthCARE Council will present Maggie Dent - Real Kids in an Unreal World at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on July 31.

Ms Dent said 10 years ago parents started trying to make sure they didn't upset their children

"Little things started to change like pass the parcel where everyone got prizes - what we've done is taken away the experience of failing and made it a sign of something wrong rather than a normal part of life," she said.

Ms Dent has developed a common-sense, practical model of 10 building blocks to help reassure parents that what we have always known to be important in the early years of a child's life is still important.

"One of things I talk to parents about is how to build children's capacity to build resilience when life doesn't go how we want," she said.

"Nobody is born resilient, when it is modelled for us and we experience setbacks, we gradually get more confident and capable.

"The model I created was about how do we build attributes in our kids that lets them strive, lets them persist, lets them have the grit to know that things don't always work out the first time and that's ok."

The seminar will offer practical, common-sense ideas and strategies to make small changes to help make a difference to children's health later in life.
