South West Phoenix Firebirds returned to the winners list with a 2-1 win against Northern Redbacks on Sunday.
A goal in each half to the Firebirds, either side of a lone Redbacks goal, was enough to see the Firebirds move back into the top two at the halfway point of the season.
The Firebirds were eager to get back on track after last week's loss at Joondalup.
They welcomed back Eliza Griffiths and Eleanor Coventry to the starting line-up, but Nicole Suttie was unavailable.
The Firebirds dominated possession early on, with Shauna Wetherell prominent, as they looked like making it a long day for the Redbacks.
However, in a theme that was consistent throughout the game, the Firebirds struggled to translate their possession into meaningful scoring opportunities.
The Redbacks did not present much of a threat when they had possession, but the Firebirds' apparent lack of a cutting edge meant the game was always going to be tight.
It was just shy of midway through the first half when the Firebirds took the lead through their trusty captain.
A good passing move, which started with Kashia King winning possession in defence, ended up with Lucy Scott's shot taking a fortuitous deflection, looping over the goalkeeper and under the bar to make it 1-0.
It looked as though the Firebirds would build on their lead, given their control of the game up until this point.
Instead, the Redbacks started to get back into the game and created some nervous moments for the Firebirds' rear-guard. At the other end, Coventry came close twice.
The half ended with the Firebirds protecting a slender, though comfortable, 1-0 lead.
The Firebirds went with the aid of a strong breeze in the second half, and could have been expected to kick on. Instead, it was the Redbacks who came out sharper.
They got back on level terms early in the second half, when a solo run caught the Firebirds off-guard and a fine finish made it 1-1.
The Firebirds desperately needed the win at home following two losses away in their last two matches.
They pressed hard and found the breakthrough when Scott's vicious in-swinging corner was diverted goalwards by Maddison Wheeler.
The Redbacks then inadvertently turned it home in the ensuing scramble as the Firebirds led 2-1, courtesy of the own goal.
The Firebirds then closed out the match comfortably, without adding to their own score, to give themselves three valuable points.
They currently sit second in the league, with just five points separating first and fifth on the table.
