Bunbury resident Michael Lay will keep his ear to the ground, in the lead-up to this year's Local Government Elections.
The 35-year-old grew up in Los Angeles, before going on to play basketball around the world.
He and his wife, Natasha Lay, then moved to Bunbury in January 2016 to start a new life.
The couple have two young children - Marlow, 1, and Macey, 3.
During his time in Bunbury, Mr Lay has served as Regional Manager, Western Australia South for the Contarf Foundation.
He and the organisation provide much-needed assistance to all those enrolled.
Mr Lay has also captained the Printsync South West Slammers men's side in the State Basketball League.
Earlier this year, fans gathered to celebrate his 200th SBL game.
Mr Lay is now looking forward to an exciting election campaign, over the next two months.
"After moving to Bunbury, it didn't take long for me to fall in love with the city itself," he said.
"I was looking for a way to contribute to the city. That led me to make the decision to run for council.
"I would love to represent the city and to make decisions on its behalf.
"I really want to give back to the city in some way, shape, or form."
Mr Lay has expressed his support for many of the city's current projects, including the Youth Precinct and the Back Beach ocean pool.
However, he believes more can be done to help the community.
"The MARKYT Community Scorecard has just been released, which highlighted a few interesting things," he said.
"My personal view is that the current council has done some amazing things.
"I will be looking to build on that by marketing myself as someone who will be connected to the community and provide strategic leadership.
"I am interested in listening to the community on how they feel the city can improve."
The candidate is calling upon all community members to either run for vote in this year's elections.
"There are some really strong candidates. I wish them every success in life first because that's most important, then with their campaign," he said.
"I think the city is yearning for some fresh faces."
This year's elections will be held on Saturday, October 19.
