Shire of Capel officially opens Capel Civic Precinct on Friday, September 6

Community members and leaders are all looking forward to the next chapter in Capel's history.

The Shire of Capel officially celebrated the town centre's revitalisation on Friday, September 6.

Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray, Federal Member for Forrest Nola Marino, and shire president Murray Scott were on-hand to cut the ribbon.

During stages 3 and 3A of the Capel Civic Precinct plan, the shire created pathways, a nature play area, an amphitheatre, an outdoor table tennis table, and a half basketball court.

New shelter, table, RV, and barbecue facilities were also installed.

Bunbury contractor Perkins Builders worked tirelessly to revitalise the area.

Brunswick contractor Carbone Bros developed a new car park - the final piece of the multi-stage project.

Shire chief executive officer Ian McCabe said the project has turned a previously underutilised area into an appealing, family-friendly space.

"We feel a great sense of pride for our community," he said.

"Our staff are now looking at how we can stage different events at the precinct, throughout the year."

The State Government reserved $1.3 million for stages 3 and 3A, while the Federal Government provided $922,384 through the Building Better Regions Fund.

The project also received $859,260 from Lotterywest and $50,000 from the Western Australian Local Government Association.

Mr Murray said the precinct would help to bring the community together during summer. "Our smaller towns in the South-West are terrific places to live, providing great lifestyle options to those who choose to call them home," he said.

"Projects like this one not only help to retain and attract residents, but also bring in visitors who spend locally. I encourage people to call into Capel and make use of the new facilities.

"I would like to congratulate the shire, funding partners, and others involved in delivering this project."

Ms Marino - along with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, and Regional Development Michael McCormack - praised the shire and the community for their efforts.
