Waste management company Cleanaway has reminded the public not to dispose of dangerous materials in general waste after two fires at its Banksia Road Landfill site in just over a fortnight.
Emergency Services personnel were called to the fire in Crooked Brook on Monday evening, January 27.
Shire of Dardanup volunteer bushfire brigades were the first on the scene, handing control of the site back to Cleanaway about 9pm before having to return in the early hours of Tuesday morning as the fire intensified.
Officers from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation later arrived to assess the impact of the fire on air quality.
The fire was the second to have occurred at the site in just over a fortnight, with a fire extinguished at the facility on January 12.
A spokesperson for Cleanaway said although the cause of the fire was not yet known, it served as a timely reminder of the risks associated with disposing of dangerous materials in general waste.
"Cleanaway will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities," the spokesperson said.
"The root cause of the fire at the Dardanup facility on January 12 is unknown given the fire was extinguished by covering it with clay.
"This is a timely reminder for people to make sure they don't dispose of dangerous materials in general waste or recycling that can cause fires such as batteries, boat flares and ammunition."
It is understood the company has since procured an additional watercart for the Dardanup facility.
