Western Meat Processors says it is working to support the staff at its Cowaramup facility after a tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a 49-year-old employee this week.
It is understood the Margaret River man, who had worked at the abattoir for 14 years, dropped a knife he had been using just before 8am on Tuesday morning, February 4.
The knife is understood to have pierced an artery and, despite efforts by ambulance officers and colleagues, the man later died as a result of his injuries.
Western Meat Processors chief executive officer Andrew Fuda said all staff at the Cowaramup facility were deeply saddened by the loss of their colleague and that support services had been provided to staff and the man's family.
"Western Meat Processors offers our deepest condolences and support to the family of our employee who had been a valued member of our team for many years," he said.
"We also thank and acknowledge his colleagues and the volunteer ambulance officers who provided first aid and did all they could to save the life of their workmate."
The Mail understands that Police and WorkSafe officers attended the site following the accident and again on Wednesday, February 5, and an investigation is underway.
Western Meat Processors confirmed it is assisting them with their enquiries.
While the facility had been cleared to operate by authorities, management made the decision to close the site on February 5 out of respect to its workforce and the deceased man's family.
