Perkins Builders awarded contract for $18m Bushfire Centre of Excellence

Bunbury-based construction company Perkins Builders celebrated after being awarded two new, multi-million dollar projects.

Last month, the business received the contract to re-develop International Gates 52, 53, and 54 at Terminal 1, Perth Airport.

As per the contract, Perkins will replace the existing stairs and single head aerobridges with new ramps and lifts.

The new dual head aerobridges will "facilitate faster turnaround times and an improved product for airline partners".

"Perkins has already completed a number of projects at Perth Airport over the last seven years, so we understand the airport environment and the complexities of working airside," Perkins group general manager Darryl Lathwell said.

"We know we can deliver a high-quality result for the airport and the Western Australian community, and we are looking forward to partnering again with our long-standing client."

The construction phase will kick off in March, with the project scheduled for completion in June 2021.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Perkins would develop Australia's first-ever Bushfire Centre of Excellence.

Stationed at the Peel Business Park in Nambeelup, the $18m purpose-built centre is expected to become an "internationally renowned facility for bushfire management learning and skills development".

The centre will feature specialist indoor and outdoor training facilities, collaboration spaces, and an interpretive learning centre.

"Perkins is very happy to be awarded a state-funded regional project," Mr Lathwell said.

"Being a regional business ourselves, we understand the importance of investment that will filter down through the whole community.

"The Department of Finance, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, and their consultants have been developing the design over recent months, and Perkins will be responsible for the construction of the new facility.

"The majority of staff, subcontractors, and suppliers engaged for centre will come from the South-West and Peel regions."

The project's construction phase is due for completion in November 2020.
