Bunbury Water Polo to compete in the 2020 WA Country Championships, in Port Hedland
Bunbury Water Polo is sending a strong contingent of male and female players to compete in the 2020 WA Country Championships.
Held from February 28 to March 1, the tournament will see some of the state's best water polo teams converge upon the Port Hedland Aquatic Centre.
Both the men's and women's competitions will feature six teams each.
Bunbury's men's side (13 players) and women's squad (11) have been in-training since October last year.
Bunbury Water Polo president Alice Luscombe said the players and coaches were all "extremely confident" going into the tournament.
"This year, the club has rallied to try and get everyone up to Port Hedland," she said.
"We enjoy taking part in big inter-club tournaments like this one...the standard of competition is really high."
Bunbury's men's team secured last year's championship title with a 10-6 grand final win over Geraldton.
After claiming two wins and one loss, Bunbury's women's side was destroyed by Karratha (19-9) in the decider.
Six of Bunbury's players were picked to represent WA in the 2019 Australian Country Water Polo Championships, on the Gold Coast.
Bunbury women's captain Kylie English said both teams were in with a chance of bringing home gold.
"The women's team is looking to go one better, this time around," she said.
"I'm looking forward to returning to my home town - I haven't been up to Port Hedland for about 10 years."
Luscombe and English would like to thank the players, coaches, and organising committee for their efforts.
The club is eagerly looking forward to hosting next year's WA Country Championships.
