The City of Bunbury council has agreed to contribute $35,000 in a bid to secure hosting rights to the state football league's televised regional fixture in May.
The proposal, presented by the West Australian Football Commission, will involve a double header at Hands Oval between Swan Districts Football Club and the West Coast Eagles in the men's and Swan Districts and Peel Thunder Football Clubs in the women's.
It is understood a South West Football League match between South Bunbury and Collie football clubs will also be held as part of the weekend event.
The proposal was formally agreed to by the City of Bunbury council during a council meeting on February 18, with an amendment by councillor Kris Plumb to enter into negotiations with the commission to secure the fixture for the next three years.
With the regional fixture expected to draw as many as 4,000 spectators, City of Bunbury deputy mayor Jaysen Miguel said the event would be a major drawcard to visitors to Bunbury and thanked the South West Football League for working to attract the fixture.
"The West Australian Football Commission sees Bunbury as a suitable location for a regional fixture - that alone is a big win for our wonderful city and our sporting clubs," he said.
"A WAFL and WAFLW double header at Hands Oval, which is in exceptional playing condition, will be a major drawcard to get visitors to Bunbury while also providing yet another great sporting event for our local community."
Western Australian Football Commission executive manager Scott Baker thanked stakeholders for uniting to make the event possible and said the region had been a terrific breeding ground for football talent over the years.
"It's really important we continue rewarding this and encouraging growth and development in the area," he said.
"We hope that showcasing these games in Bunbury will encourage a new generation of local boys and girls to pick up a football and become the WAFL and WAFLW players of the future."
