A 24-year-old Bunbury man will spend the next five months behind bars after admitting to a series of "degrading" offences from last year.
Ross John Woods faced Bunbury Magistrates Court via video link from Casuarina Prison on March 5, over two counts of assaulting a public officer and one of being armed/pretending to be armed in a way that may cause fear.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Darren Clifton told the court that the 24-year-old was spotted at Centrepoint Shopping Centre at 5.50pm on April 29, 2019.
Sgt. Clifton said Woods was already banned from the centre so was asked to leave.
The court heard that, after multiple attempts to re-enter the building, Woods pulled out a pocket knife and threatened a security guard.
The court was told that in a separate incident, at Bunbury Regional Prison on June 25, Woods became upset and broke apart a plastic chair.
He then picked up one of the pieces (a chair leg) and threw it at a prison officer. The chair leg struck the victim in the arm.
The court heard that on July 9, Woods was told he was being transferred to maximum security.
He kicked and spat at a prison officer, before being taken down.
Defence counsel Michelle Huber said her client suffered from fetal alcohol syndrome and struggled to control/regulate his emotions.
She added that Woods was looking to leave Bunbury and live in Beechbro with his sister.
Taking the seriousness of the offences into account, Sgt. Clifton said Woods should serve an immediate term of imprisonment.
The presiding magistrate said the July 2019 incident was a "degrading and demeaning way of dealing with others".
After spending another five months in jail, Woods will serve a three-month suspended sentence (suspended for six months).
