The Bunbury Bowling Club recently hosted the Ladies South West League Championships.
The event was held over three consecutive days between eight of the clubs within the SW League.
The format of the competition required individuals (singles, veterans, and novices) and teams (pairs, triples, and fours) from each club playing seven games in three days, in hot and humid conditions.
Points were awarded for each game won, with bonus points going to the section champions.
Competition was very tight, with the result in the balance until the final games were completed on the last day.
A very high standard of play was witnessed throughout the tournament with many of the games being decided by a single shot.
All players are to be congratulated on the marathon effort involved and the wonderful display of spirit and friendship shown.
In the major singles event, Bunbury's Ann Dunn was triumphant, continuing her excellent recent form, losing only one game against some formidable opponents, a well-deserved win.
The triples event proved very exciting, with the Bunbury team of Kath Gendall, Gail Ecclestone and Pam Grigg, with one loss, going into the final round needing to beat the undefeated Busselton team by a good margin.
They succeeded in emphatic fashion, with a 29-5 victory.
These two section wins - along with a runner-up result by Helen Wallace in the veteran's singles event and the many points provided by game wins from the fours team of Sue Delaporte, Betty Italiano, Rhonda Christinger, Julie George and the pairs team of Carol Sandison and Dot deBoer - enabled Bunbury to emerge as the deserved overall winners of the competition, thereby retaining the coveted winner's Shield.
Busselton were a close runner-up with Eaton third.
