The City of Bunbury's journey to reconciliation has taken another step forward with the unveiling of new street banners designed by local Noongar artists.
The imagery on the flags adorning Victoria Street has been taken from a selection of silk scarves created by 13 local indigenous artists.
The street banner project is part of the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery's Noongar Art Program, sponsored through the federal government's Indigenous Visual Art Industry Support program.
Summit Realty South West has kindly donated its billboard to help tell the story behind the banners and showcase their designs.
The local artists involved are Rhona Wallam, Erica Anthony, Dellas Bennell, Beverly Thomson, Tracy Bellotti, Dawn Alone, Lera Bennell, Marjorie Ugle, Joanne Ugle, Joyce Dimer, Erica Dimer, Charmaine Thorne, and Korrine Bennell.
The City of Bunbury - in collaboration with the Shires of Harvey, Capel and Dardanup - developed the first collaborative Reconciliation Action Plan, 'Reflect', which was endorsed by Reconciliation Australia and the respective councils last year.
This initiative aligns with the city's Reconciliation Action Plan - focused on creating meaningful relationships, enhanced respect and promoting sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
Reconciliation Week runs from May 27 to June 3.
