The state government and Tourism Western Australia have teamed up to help the state's struggling tourism sector survive the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
Over the next few months, a new Industry Support Team will be offering support and information to WA's tourism operators.
The team will assist them with navigating various state and federal government assistance packages.
"We know tourism operators are doing it tough at the moment, so we want them to know we're here for them," Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said.
"The new team will provide an opportunity for industry to provide feedback on how they are dealing with this pandemic."
Pleased with the move, Bunbury MLA Don Punch said the government was committed to getting Bunbury and WA's tourism industries back on track.
"Tourism is a major part of our economy, and we have really good tourism assets," he said.
"There's no doubt that every sector in our region is being affected by the virus. Our first obligation, however, is to stop the virus and protect our community.
"We need to do everything we possibly can to ensure our tourism operators can open up again, once the restrictions are lifted."
Visit Bunbury Geographe tourism, marketing, and development manager Anissa Williams congratulated the government and Tourism WA on the initiative.
"I commend Tourism WA for reallocating resources to tourism industry support teams. One-on-one mentoring and industry support is key to business survival and their emotional well-being," she said.
"Local, state and federal governments, tourism associations, economic development organisations, and chambers of commerce are working expeditiously together (via zoom meetings) to help our tourism, hospitality, and event industry navigate these unprecedented times.
"I would send my admiration to those local businesses that have stayed strong, passionate, and innovative, and pivoted their business to survive and provide much-needed services to consumers.
"The hardship is working, but it must continue for the long-term future of our tourism industry."
The South West Alliance Response and Recovery sub-working group, led by the Bunbury Geographe Economic Alliance, is now developing a 'COVID Recovery and Response Portal' for the region's residents and businesses.
