A free online training program is now available to local small business owners in Bunbury, offering practical guidance on building a mentally healthy workplace after a challenging year for the Australian economy.
The program, called Business Wellbeing, is an initiative of Everymind, a leading national institute dedicated to reducing mental ill-health, reducing suicide and improving wellbeing.
The series of four 10-15-minute modules that make up the training are specific to the small business environment, and guide small business owners to promote positive mental health and wellbeing in their workplaces.
Once registered, users can access the training at any time and from anywhere and have until May 30 to complete it. Everymind project lead Yohana Franklin says for many small business owners, there has been no relief from a long period of high stress.
"With the long COVID-19 pandemic, and the bushfires and other adverse events that came before it, small business owners haven't had a break from sustained stress, and that's when people might experience mental ill-health."
There are also stresses that are unique to small businesses that mean for owners, mental health can sometimes come second to running their business.
Small business owners can sometimes feel they can't take a day off, they often feel the stress of maintaining cash flow and the survival of their business, and feel responsible for the welfare of staff.
"It's a lot of responsibility and stress for one person to take," Yohana says.
Now is a great time to gain more skills and knowledge in this area and enter the new financial year with a mentally healthy business."
The Business Wellbeing modules cover topics including information about mental health, what is stigma and how to overcome it, how to have effective communication and build safe workplaces where talking about mental health is normalised, and how to promote positive mental health in a business.
The training is delivered in a variety of formats, including activities, case studies from small business owners, fact sheets and videos.
In conjunction with the training, participants may be keen to explore the Ahead for Business digital hub, where they can find further resources on mental health and wellbeing for small business.
