Bunbury student donates football boots to remote schools

As part of the Round Square Service project, Busselton-based Henry Winspear will be donating his boots to the remote Pia Wadjarri Community School and Yalgoo Primary School, in order to give students a chance to experience playing footy with the correct footwear.

Henry said going on a family holiday to remote Western Australia and seeing children play footy without boots was what inspired him to take part in the project.

"I thought that it would be pretty tough playing footy on the hot, red dirt and prickles with no boots on. My old boots are perfectly fine, they're just too small for me," Henry said.

Supported by the Grammar School, the Round Square Service project enables students to share education and learning around various themes including leadership, service and environmental understanding.

Through relatives, Henry was able to get in contact with a teacher at Pia Wadjarri Community School who offered to transport 40 pairs of boots back to the school at the end of the Easter school holidays.

Now at 19 boots, Henry hopes to continue working towards his goal of 40 boots with the help of the Grammar School as well as donations from the Bunbury Bulldogs Football Club.

He is also looking to Gumtree for donations of boots from the community, even spending his own pocket money to purchase some.

"I'm excited for the kids when they receive their boots and have their first run around with the football."
