Schalke players can decide for themselves whether they want to play in the final Bundesliga matches for the relegated club, after players and officials were attacked by fans.
"I can live with this position if a player doesn't want to play for Schalke in the remaining four games," board member Peter Knaebel told Friday's Bild paper.
Knaebel said officials are holding individual talks with the players and are offering help.
The team was insulted and physically attacked by some as several hundred fans were on hand when they returned to their stadium after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at Arminia Bielefeld which sealed the fourth relegation in club history.
Police spoke of "massive aggression" and are probing the incident.
Schalke have no game this weekend as the match against Hertha Berlin has been postponed owing to Hertha's coronavirus-related team quarantine.
