It's the last weeks of the annual Recfishwest Salmon Slam competition, and there are still chances for anglers to win.
By the end of May, one lucky salmon chaser will have won a dinghy, trailer and outboard package valued at more than $9,000 - the top-prize of the 2021 Salmon Slam - for simply catching a salmon.
More than 1,500 salmon chasers have downloaded the Salmon Slam app and submitted their catches in the three-month land-based fishing competition, coinciding with WA's annual salmon run - and that's despite it not being the greatest salmon run due to exceptionally warm water temperatures this year.
Many prizes, including Shimano Saragosa 5000 reels and Shimano Coltsniper 10ft rods, have already been claimed by passionate salmon fishers during the free competition's opening four phases.
However, only one fisher can take home the 3.5m Seejay aluminium dinghy, powered by a six horse-power, four-stroke Honda outboard and trailer, donated by Rusty's Marine in Albany.
A random draw will decide the top-prize winner - so all fishers need to do to be in the running to win the tinny-trailer-outboard package is simply download the Salmon Slam app, catch a salmon and enter it in the comp.
For Recfishwest, it has been great to see many salmon chasers join us on the run and celebrate salmon as an iconic southern sportfish during this year's salmon migration.
"The many salmon caught by fishers keeping the sand between their toes at some of the world's best beaches this autumn has been fantastic," Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland said.
"To have more than 1,500 salmon fishers take part in the comp so far really highlights the importance of salmon to WA's recreational fishing community - they're truly a highly valued sportfish."
With the Salmon Slam's fifth phase currently in progress, there's two fortnightly phases of the seven-phase competition remaining.
So, there is still time to catch a salmon and enter this year's Salmon Slam for a chance to win the many fantastic prizes on offer including the dinghy, outboard and trailer package.
Anyone who submits a legitimate salmon entry in the Salmon Slam will go into the draw for the chance to win the top-prize.
A random draw will also determine who wins a Hobie Revolution Kayak valued at $3,150, donated by Getaway Outdoors, and one of two Shimano Stella 5000SW reels.
The two Stellas, one of which is a part of the prize pack for the four longest salmon overall winner, were donated by Compleat Angler Nedlands and Compleat Angler Rockingham.
"Although most of the salmon entered in the Salmon Slam have been caught along south coast and South West beaches, more salmon have been caught near Mandurah recently," Dr Rowland said.
"Unfortunately, warmer water temperatures caused by the La Nina weather event has meant it hasn't been the greatest salmon run so far this year.
"However, with the mounting reports of catches near Mandurah and beaches south of Perth, hopefully metro fishers will still have the chance to catch a salmon or two this salmon run.
"If you manage to find yourself a salmon school and catch a couple of fish, be sure to submit your catch through the Salmon Slam app in a bid to win these top-quality prizes."
