Victorian construction workers to get priority Pfizer vaccine access

There will be 20,000 Pfizer appointments released and unlimited access to AstraZeneca to all construction workers.

About 87 per cent of all active cases now under the age of 50 and with 585 of current cases aged 19 or younger, the state government has expanded the vaccine eligibility to anyone aged 12 years and over.

There are 529 active COVID cases under age of nine, 840 aged in their 20s and 627 in their 30s.

Health Minister Martin Foley said most COVID-19 cases are in young people.

"Today, like our general practice and primary healthcare partners, we are of course pleased to expand the vaccine eligibility to anyone aged 12 years and over, and with 585 of the current active cases aged 19 or younger, the importance of vaccinating teenagers is clearly very strong," he said.

He said 529 of the active cases are under the age of nine years.

Victoria recorded 473 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, as regional exposure sites continue to grow.

Of today's new, locally acquired cases, 91 per cent were recorded in the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne. Just over 200 were linked to known outbreaks - the rest are under active investigation.

The state is now sitting at 66.9 per cent vaccination in those over the age of 16, with 41 per cent of Victorians fully vaccinated.

It comes as an outbreak among V/Line train drivers spread to five infections, forcing more than 300 staff into isolation and buses to replace train services.

Meanwhile, NSW recorded 1257 new cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday.

Seven deaths from COVID-19 were reported to NSW Health and 137,668 tests were conducted in the same timeframe.

There are 1,189 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 222 people in intensive care, 94 on ventilators.
