Gelorup Fire Brigade host safety expo on September 21

Now in spring time, all of the emergency services are preparing for what summer could bring.

Gelorup Fire Brigade chief Chris Scott said at the expo they will talk to people about what they need to do to prepare their blocks and ensure they have a fire plan in place.

"It refreshes their memory and people ask questions that we hope can answer," he said.

With the large amount of rainfall during winter and spring, Mr Scott said he expected there would be a lot of dry grass around, making it more important for people to clean their blocks before December 1.

Bunbury SES manager Chris Widmer said they will have a similar message to people on the night.

"Things that cause storm damage is what lets a fire in the house, so we will talk about how people can get serious," he said.

"Eighty-five per cent of the call outs this year to SES were preventable if people had cleaned their gutters.

"So people aren't getting the message that they have a part to play in all this."

Bunbury Marine Rescue will also be part of the expo and will talk about flares and general boat safety.

They will also be showing people the new app called 'deckee' which helps let people know where you are on the ocean if something bad were to happen.

We are all volunteers and all call 24 hours, if get a call 2am we have to attend. put our lives at risk for people who may not be looking after their house.

Both Mr Scott and Widmer said volunteers were always needed, particularly with the current group getting older and less people able to be called out during work hours.

People will be able to stop by the Gelorup Fire Brigade from 4-8pm on Tuesday September 21, where there will be a sausage sizzle and plenty of information to take home.
