The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is bringing their award winning program "Barang Koorliny (Get moving)" to the wider community in eight free weekly lifestyle sessions around Bunbury.
Last year, SWAMS successfully delivered two workshops to the local Aboriginal community with the goal of educating people about falls prevention all while giving participants the opportunity to participate in social group activities and enjoy a meal together.
The project was so successful they were named winners of the Injury Matters 2021 Outstanding Achievement in Injury Prevention or Recovery Support within ATSI Communities Award.
Barang Koorliny program coordinator Estee Gordon said they found there was a gap in free and accessible activities in the community.
"We wanted to bring elements of this project to as many people as we could because we found participants really benefited from the first workshops," she said.
This year's program aims to promote healthy aging and dementia awareness. Each session will include a crafty, creative or mindful activity and accessible light exercises to try. The program will explore different ways to stay healthy as people age in mind, body and spirit.
This fun, free program is for those aged 45 years and older and will showcase many accessible venues around Bunbury. You can attend as many events as you like and transport is available on request.
