'Community has a hit at new sport' - October 6, 2021
PICKLEBALL
Pickleball the sport of choice in Bunbury.
There was a new sport in Bunbury that's not quite tennis and not quite badminton, but had been increasingly referred to as the fastest growing sport in Western Australia.
Picture this: it was the summer of 1965 and American businessman Joel Pritchard has returned home from playing golf with his friends.
In their boredom and inability to find the correct equipment for badminton, the group located a whiffle ball and paddles made from plywood.
'Rider on track for the win' - October 13, 2021
MOTOCROSS
Bunbury hosted 2021 WAMX Junior and Senior Motocross Championships.
The Bunbury Motorcycle Club track came alive in October to host the final round of the 2021 Junior and Senior West Australian Motocross Championships.
Round six of the junior championships took place on Saturday, October 16, where Bunbury-based rider Jake Rumens joined West Australia's best junior riders to race towards coming out on top.
'Croquet a sport for all ages' - October 20, 2021
CROQUET
Moorabinda Croquet Club welcomed new players of all ages.
"Croquet is a sport stereotyped as just for retirees, and that's the image we've got to get rid of".
Those were the words of croquet player John Jury who has been playing for more than 20 years.
With 11 of those years as secretary for the Moorabinda Croquet Club at Hay Park, Jury said although croquet was "undeniably" a sport attracting older players in the past, there was now a real drive to attract a younger demographic.
'Female duo take the helm' - November 10, 2021
SAILING
Koombana Bay Sailing Club finalist for Australian Sailing Club of the Year.
A DYNAMIC duo successfully led a Bunbury sailing club into the future as the Western Australian Sailing Club of the Year.
Awarded in early October, the recognition meant the Koombana Bay Sailing Club had a one-in-three chance of receiving the national title, which was decided in late November.
'Fit for three generations' - November 17, 2021
TRIATHLON
Three generation family enjoyed 2021 Bunbury Women's Triathlon.
A three generation family - aged 13, 42 and 66 - took on the 16th annual, Bunbury Women's Triathlon.
Held on Sunday, November 14, triathlete Sarah Behan, her mother Susan Pember, and her daughter Annabelle Behan, underwent a 300 metre swim, a 12 kilometre ride and three kilometre run.
'A great opportunity: Cody called to colts' - November 24, 2021
CRICKET
Dalyellup Cricket Academy student selected for 2021/22 Country Colts Squad.
A FIFTEEN-year old Dalyellup College student was chosen to represent Bunbury as part of the under 21 Country Colts Squad for the 2021/22 season.
One of the youngest cricketers selected for the team, Cody Ryan competed in two 'trial matches' at Murdoch University earlier this month.
He was one of 18 players selected for the Perth squad.
'Learn life skills in the ring' - December 1, 2021
BOXING
Eaton Boxing Club celebrated one year in action.
WHEN Dion Billett herniated three discs in his spine which required multiple spinal operations, he questioned what his next steps would be.
He was working fly-in, fly-out as a rescue paramedic but had been an avid boxer in Karratha since he was 13 years old.
Boxing, which Billett used for his own rehabilitation post surgery, turned out to be the answer.
'Saffy goes for Olympic gold' - December 8, 2021
SWIMMING
Bunbury swimmer Alex Saffy received the 2021 Wally Foreman Foundation Scholarship.
Four years ago, Alex Saffy noticed something was different about his body.
As one of his feet started to curve, he struggled to bounce on a trampoline and would often trip over when running.
After visiting a neurologist, 15-year-old Saffy said he was "really surprised" to be diagnosed with dyskinetic cerebral palsy and myotonic dystrophy (muscle weakness).
'In memory of Percival' - December 15, 2021
GOLF
Capel Golf Club hosts PK Cup charity event on December 19.
Shaun Knott grew up playing golf with his late father, Percival, also known as PK, who was a member of the Carey Park Golf Club for over 25 years.
Despite sadly passing away in 2016, Knott said he can still hear PK's voice when he plays golf today.
'Pair jumps to new heights' - December 22, 2021
PARKOUR
Dalyellup X5 Academy nominated in 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards.
WILL Tuck and Brandon Parker were teenagers when they first discovered a new sport that they would enjoy well into adulthood.
After wanting to take gymnastics out of the classroom and onto the streets, the pair took to YouTube to discover a way to get from point A to B in the most efficient, creative way possible.
They discovered parkour, and now run one of the biggest parkour and free running academies in the South West.
